childrens dentistryWant to Be a Dentist?

Hey, kids! Interested in becoming a dentist? We have some great info for you on this rewarding career!

What Do Dentists Do?

You might think being a dentist is just about examining and fixing teeth, but it actually involves much more than that. Here are some interesting things dentists do:

  • Diagnose and treat dental diseases, sports injuries, and fix other problems with the teeth and mouth
  • Improve a patient’s appearance, which can boost self esteem
  • Perform surgeries such as implants, grafts, and tooth extractions
  • Teach patients of all ages how to take good care of their teeth and gums
  • Teach future dentists and dental hygienists
  • Research new ways to improve oral health and treat diseases of the mouth

Dentists also get to work in a wide variety of places, such as offices, hospitals, laboratories, for the military, and in schools. A career as a dentist is never boring!

Why Become a Dentist?

A career in dentistry has many rewards. As a dentist, you provide a wonderful service to others by helping them maintain and improve their oral health, quality of life, and appearance. Dentists also have flexible hours and get to be their own bosses. Working as a dentist also gains you the respect of your family, friends, and community, and gives you an opportunity to creatively use your artistic and scientific talents. As a dentist, you’ll also know that you’ll never have to worry about having a job. As long as people have teeth, the world will need dentists!

How Do You Become a Dentist?

If you are serious about a career in dentistry, it’s important to know that becoming a dentist involves a lot of work. Most dentists much complete a four year college degree before even applying for dental school. Although you don’t have to major in a science to be accepted to a dental college, you do have to take a whole lot of science classes! Some of the classes you will need to complete before dental school are eight hours of biology with lab, eight hours of physics, eight hours of general chemistry with lab, eight hours of organic chemistry with lab, and eight hours of English. Many other classes are required to earn a four year college degree, but exactly what you’ll need to take will be decided by the college you choose to attend.

Becoming a dentist will require a lot of hard work on your part, but if you love helping people and love science, it just might be the perfect career for you!
