Fluoride is a mineral that is naturally found in soil, rocks, water, and food. You may have heard your dentist talk about the importance of fluoride for teeth. But what exactly is it and why do we need it? This blog will help to explain why fluoride is so critical for your dental health and how you can be exposed to it.

Why is Fluoride for Teeth Important?

Every day, our tooth enamel loses minerals in a process called demineralization. If too many minerals are lost without being replenished, a cavity can form and the tooth can decay. Fluoride helps to replenish the lost minerals. Fluoride is especially important in the development of permanent teeth; therefore, it’s critical for children between the ages of six months and 16 years to be exposed to the mineral. Adults can benefit from fluoride as well, as it helps to strengthen teeth, prevent tooth decay, and even reverse early decay.

How Do We Get Fluoride?

Like we mentioned above, fluoride is naturally found in food and water. But, there are other ways to be exposed to fluoride:

  • Public Water – Since the 1940s, fluoride has been incorporated into public water supplies in the United States. According to the CDC, two-thirds of Americans have fluoridated public water.
  • Fluoride Treatments – During your regular dental check-up the dental hygienist might suggest that you get a professional fluoride treatment. In this case, the hygienist will fill a tray with a fluoride gel and apply it directly to your teeth for several minutes to aid in the remineralization process.
  • Mouthwashes and Toothpastes – There are many dental products available that contain an extra boost of fluoride. These products are especially useful for kids.
