Updates on Typhoon Haiyan Relief

Dentists help in the PhilippinesConsidered to be the deadliest typhoon to hit the Phillippines, Typhoon Haiyan struck the area on November 8, 2013, killing at least 6,201 people and leaving devastating damage in its wake. Members of the dental community, including the American Dental Association and the American Dental Association Foundation, have come together to offer resources and support to the people still recovering from this terrible storm.

The ADA and ADA Foundation Relief Effort

Both the ADA and ADA Foundation are committed to assisting the Philippines during this time of great need. The ADA foundation is still accepting donations that specifically aid dentists and other dental care providers and the combined ADA and ADA Foundation donations are being combined and sent to reputable nonprofits that will then distribute the funds wherever the greatest need is. Other members of the dental support community have also contributed to the relief effort, including:

Procter & Gamble: P&G has made a donation to the ADA Foundation’s relief effort and has pledged more than $1.6 million in product donations. P&G will also distribute products to organizations such as the Philippine Red Cross, World Vision, and other local groups that are aiding the Philippines in its recovery. P&G has also sent more than one million sachets of their water purifiers to people without access to clean drinking water. Each sachet can purify up to 10 liters of contaminated water.

Henry Schein Inc: Makers of health care products and a health care service provider, HSI has donated $150,000 in support. The company is also working with organizations such as AmeriCares, Direct Relief, and MedShare to provide funds and health care supplies to the ongoing relief efforts. Henry Schein Inc chairman and chief executive officer Stanley Bergman states: “The citizens of the Philippines remain in dire need of assistance and Henry Schein is committed to supporting relief efforts for the victims of this terrible tragedy.”

Benco Dental: Benco Dental has donated more than $10,000 in support for the typhoon victims. The company also held employee fundraisers to help aid the relief effort.

Patterson Dental: Patterson Dental has teamed up with AmeriCares to donate 1,200 boxes of Patterson Private Label latex free gloves and used Koch Logistics to handle the shipment at no charge.

This dedication by the dental community to help the Typhoon Haiyan relief effort was best summarized by ADA executive director Kathleen O’Loughlin, who said in a letter to Dr. Fernando Fernandez, Philippine Dental Association President, “It is in times of great need that organizations need to come together to strengthen and rebuild what has been lost. Your colleagues in the United States are thinking about your country and hope to hear from you in the near future.”
